Teeth Whitening: Facts, Myths, and Professional Solutions

Teeth Whitening: Facts, Myths, and Professional Solutions

Why Do Teeth Become Discolored?

Tooth discoloration falls into two categories:

  • Extrinsic staining: Surface stains caused by coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, and certain foods. These respond well to whitening treatments.
  • Intrinsic discoloration: Staining within the tooth structure, caused by aging, certain medications (e.g., tetracycline), excessive fluoride, or trauma. These are more difficult to treat and may require alternative cosmetic solutions like veneers.

Common Myths About Teeth Whitening

Myth 1: "Whitening damages enamel."
Professional whitening products use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide at controlled concentrations. When applied correctly by a dentist, they do not damage enamel. Over-the-counter products used excessively, however, can cause sensitivity or surface damage.

Myth 2: "Once whitened, teeth stay white forever."
Whitening is not permanent. Results typically last 6 months to 2 years depending on diet and habits. Touch-up treatments can extend results significantly.

Myth 3: "Charcoal toothpaste whitens teeth."
Activated charcoal products are abrasive and can actually erode enamel over time. There is no reliable scientific evidence supporting their whitening effectiveness.

Myth 4: "Home kits are just as good as professional whitening."
Over-the-counter whitening strips contain much lower concentrations of active ingredients. They may improve shade by 1–2 levels. Professional in-office whitening can achieve 6–8 levels in a single session.

Professional Whitening at Centre Dentaire Maamora

We offer two professional whitening options:

In-Office Whitening: A high-concentration gel is applied to the teeth and activated with a specialized light. The session takes approximately 60–90 minutes and delivers immediate, dramatic results.

Take-Home Trays: We fabricate custom-fitted trays and provide professional-grade gel for use at home over 10–14 days. This option is gentler and allows patients to control the level of whitening.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Whitening works best on:

  • Yellow or brownish extrinsic staining
  • Patients with healthy teeth and gums
  • Adults (whitening is not recommended for children or pregnant women)

Whitening does not change the color of crowns, veneers, or fillings — these will need to be replaced if you want a uniform appearance after treatment.

Managing Sensitivity

Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect. We recommend using a desensitizing toothpaste for 2 weeks before treatment and avoiding extremely hot or cold foods immediately after. Most sensitivity resolves within 24–48 hours.
